The SYLK file format is such that fields which appear contiguous on a spreadsheet may not be stored contiguously in the SYLK file. Therefore, fields are placed in the data file as they are reached in the SYLK file and the contents of the new fixed-length record is not known until the entire file has been created. The Merge with File task for DisplayWrite 3 text processing program uses the first row in the spreadsheet with alphanumeric data as field names and converts the separator row to deleted records. To create a fixed-length file, an initial pass through the SYLK file is made to determine the maximum length of each field.
