An arrangement is described for use with an interactive text processing system that provides both a visual indication of the presence of an Audio Annotation upon any type of data object, and also a means of selecting an Audio Annotation for processing. An Audio Annotation such as a warning "beep" or an actual voice message attached to a primary data object is indicated by an icon, or special symbol, which indicates an Audio Data Object. Editing operations upon the primary object apply to the annotation, and thus also affect the Audio Annotation Mark as well. The Audio Annotation is selected for processing by selecting the Audio Annotation Mark.
