A technique is described whereby a single diskette drive mechanism, as used with personal computers, has the capability of accommodating diskettes of two different diameters, particularly 3.5 and 5.25 inches. The concept permits users to utilize new smaller diskettes while continuing to use older and larger diskettes. Although the concept focuses on the 5.25" to 3.5" transition, the technique described is applicable to future diameter disks, such as 2.0" and 1.5" diskettes. Also, the concept is not only restricted to different size diameters of diskettes, but the technique could accommodate three and even four different diameter sizes of diskettes, since half high drives may be used for each diameter size drive.
