This article relates to a customer identification system for transaction terminals in which a PIN (personal identification number) manually entered by a customer at a terminal is checked for coincidence with a PIN previously registered for that customer. If no-coincidence is detected, then the total number N of the no-coincidence checking is recorded on the customer's cash card to make it detectable when the number reaches a predetermined value K for making the card invalid for further transactions. The present invention makes it possible for the card recorded with the value K for the non-coincidence number to be used for further transactions only when the PIN coincidence is confirmed in two subsequent successive checks.
