The figure is a cross-sectional view taken through the band of a band- type dot matrix printer. An endless moving band 1 has a series of anvils 2 spaced along its length. When the anvil is in an appropriate position, a hammer strikes it on the back surface 2B to impact an inked ribbon 3 against the paper 4. A lubrication system includes a block of porous UHMW polyethylene 5 that has been saturated with oil. The back surface of the anvil slides across the surface 5A of the porous polyethylene pad, depositing a thin layer of oil on the surface of the anvil. The oil deposition rate is controlled by the combination of oil viscosity and the polyethylene pad porosity, and a linear rate is preferred over the life of the printer.
