In the past, networked communication systems had no means to measure the availability of Systems Network Architecture (SNA) virtual routes although several measure the availability of individual components. Moreover, although some systems provide performance data on individual components of a network route or communication path, none have measured the transit delay of an entire virtual route. The Network Programmed Operator/Availability Data Collection (NPO/ADC) program accomplishes both of these tasks. NPO/ADC uses VTAM messages that indicate failures to trigger a VTAM "DISPLAY ROUTE TEST" command. The DISPLAY command is issued from all hosts that have paths defined to the affected NCP (Network Control Program).
