Some text and graphics printers, such as the IBM 5152 Model 002 Printer, include a look-ahead feature which enables the printer to organize the printing of the next successive line while printing a current line of type. By so doing, the printer is able to return to the beginning of text in the next line rather than having to return to the left border each time. This feature is only operative in text mode because of the relatively undefined borders of graphics data. Consequently, the printer, when operating in graphics mode, returns to the left border after printing each line. The efficiency of the printer can be substantially improved by providing means for enabling the printhead to return to the start of the print line, even when operating in graphics mode.
