Abstract

A method is provided for allowing the user of a terminal or workstation connected to a computer system to press the HELP key, after locating the cursor at a diagnostic message, which will open an Online Help manual, which sets forth help for that specific message. This Online Help Facility has the concept of the help text being in an online manual, a standard text document. The online manual is opened to the correct page and line using the fact that messages on the system have the concept of codes associated with them, and are called Message Identification Codes (MIC). These codes are made up of components and numbers for the individual messages, for example, TXT-1234. Therefore, when an application displays a message, that message has an associated MIC number. The MIC number requires an association in the Online Document.
