Logarithmic Range Differential Pulse Coded Modulation

A technique is described whereby logarithmic range differential pulse coded modulation is used in data compression intended primarily in the transmission or storage of video monitor or television raster scans. The technique described herein is essentially an improvement over prior art, in that logarithmic range functions are utilized in the implementation of data compression in order to compensate for slope overload errors between the original and reproduced signals. In prior-art differential pulse coded modulation (DPCM), a difference signal is used for the data compression storage or transmission in place of the original signal. The difference signal produced is relative to the previous measured signal.
