Flatness is a major concern on many flexible film materials such as flexible printed circuity. These materials have a very low flexural strength and any contact measurement technique would disturb the planarity of the surface. A non-contact measurement technique utilizing collimated light sources, an optical reader and a method of interpreting the resultant data provides a topographical map of such a surface.
