Interferometers for Optical Heterodyne Detection

Optical heterodyne detection is an important technique for shot noise limited detection of signals in optical sensing and communication applications. In these applications, informatio carried in the form of phase or amplitude modulation of a light beam, which one detects by combining this beam with a local oscillator beam. For optimum signal to noise, both the amplitude and phase of the local oscillator wave must be accurately controlled. Interferometer configurations related to the usua Fabry-Perot which are capable of detecting weak modulation of a laser beam with optimum shot noise limited performance have now been found.
