PIN Verification With Multiple Personal Identification Codes

This article describes a compartmentalized transaction security facility usable by a customer with a single bank card and a single personal identification number (PIN), but having isolation between user institutions and classes of transactions. Fig. 1 shows an overall environment in which such a facility would be used, including various combinations of local and remote bank, automated teller machine (ATM) and point-of-sale (POS) sub-environments. The several sub-environments shown in Fig. 1 could be accommodated by a sufficient number of independent data groups on the customer card, but this raises a space problem on the card.
