A band line printer is provided with an interposer mechanism designed to permit printing with mini-sized characters on the type band at higher horizontal print density without changing the spacing of the print hammers. An interposer mechanism for use with a type band 1, having smaller type characters 2 spaced for printing fifteen characters/inch, comprises interposer elements 3 and 4 located between print hammers 5 and paper 6. An ink ribbon 7 is positioned between paper 6 and type band 1. As seen in Fig. 2, interposer elements 3 have wide strike surfaces 3a arranged alternately with narrow strike surfaces 4a for interposer elements 4.
