This article is related to the preceding article. The described algorithm represents an efficient mechanism to locate available records in a page data set, which consists of a sequence of page records on a non-cached, movable-head direct-access storage device (DASD). A page data set is a temporary data set on DASD for holding active pages castout of main storage due to lack of page space. The paged data in such data sets can be highly volatile and dynamically referenced, and records most likely to be read in the near future may be those which were recently written to a DASD data set.
