A method is described that will display in a user-friendly manner the external description of a file and allow the user to change any changeable fields. The UNIX* operating system uses only the "ls" command or the "li" command to display the description of multiple files for the user. Only one line is displayed for each file, and within this line only certain fields are displayed in a compact, cryptic manner. This becomes even more critical with the addition of Data Management Services files as their description is more complex. There is also no method of changing all of the changeable fields of the file description (mode, owner, group, name, comment, user type) at one time.
