During manufacture of control units for an electromechanical device such as a printer, it is necessary to test the control units prior to merging them with the mechanical hardware. Control unit testing is usually done either using special microcode which does very little control unit interface testing or using product microcode with control unit attached to mechanical hardware. The figure illustrates a test system in which mechanical hardware is electronically simulated so that the control unit may be tested using its normal product microcode. With this approach, control unit test has full use of product diagnostics and debug facilities developed for use of the maintenance personnel supporting the product in the field. A computer is attached to control and signal lines 1-8 to invoke testing and monitor test results.
