Adaptive Equalization for Cable Data Transmission System

An adaptive equalization system is provided for a digital data cable transmission system having predistortion at the transmission end and equalization at the receiving end. A limiter at the receiving end is provided in front of the equalization filter. The limiter operates to clip the predistortion pulses at short distances, thereby avoiding differentiation of transitions within a pulse provided by the predistortion, while allowing pulses attenuated normally by the travel across a long length of transmission line to pass unaffected to the equalization filter. Thus, the limiter and predistortion form a simple adaptive equalization system controlled by cable attenuation. The figure shows a simple block diagram of the system configuration.
