Field-Replaceable Fuser Back-Up Roll

In an electrophotographic machine, fuser back-up rolls are exposed to damage, contamination, and wear of the surface TEFLON* coating, all of which cause fuser failures, and all of which require that the back-up roll (BUR) be replaced. Current fuser design is such that maintenance personnel do not even attempt to change the BUR, but, instead, change the entire fuser assembly. This article describes a BUR design allowing for ease of replacement and few parts. Current fuser BUR design is shown in Fig. 1. The BUR assembly consists of the BUR core 10 into which are pressed two studs 11 and 12. Onto stud 11 is pressed a drive gear 13. Onto stud 12 is located a drive gear 14. Drive gear 14 is retained using three screws 15. A front view of the entire assembly is shown in Fig. 2. When the assembly in Fig.
