For recognizing images or data characters in a plurality of fields on a banking document, such as a deposit slip, dispense slip, transfer slip, etc., a scanning system is provided which can optically scan the respective fields with different resolution and gradations as necessary, while the document is fed at a constant speed. Referring to Fig. 1, the document is divided into a plurality of zones which are separated by gaps. Each of the zones can include a plurality of fields, each being defined by the following data in the Field Attribute Word: X, Y : Coordinates of field (upper left point of zone) N, M : Field size (Nmm x Mmm) R : Resolution (16 pels/mm or lower) G : Gradation (4 bits/pel or lower) T : Threshold for gradation In Fig.
