Method and Apparatus to Implement Disk PFW with Fixed Data Format Conversion
In a disk sector format conversion strategy there are several methods to organize the data. One method
uses a method of mapping N logical sectors to Z physical sectors. The logical sectors are generally bigger
than the physical sectors. Disk power failure warning behaviors are based on physical sector boundaries.
Therefore, disk PWF behaviors ensure that writes to the physical disk stop at a physical sector boundary.
System designs are based on the expectation that sectors will either have all old data with good check
bits or all new data with good check bits. Stopping disk activity at an even sector boundary allows the
system to make that assumption. In the case of sector conversion however the system expects the write
to stop at a logical sector boundary. Drive electronics however must write to physical sector boundaries.
The invention is to take advantage of the fact at the end of every Z sectors the physical and logical
sectors are aligned. The format conversion device is such that all disk activity is in units of Z physical
sectors and must provide a full buffered access to the disk of those Z sectors. In the event of a PWF two
strategies are possible based on system power constraints. Either the PFW is hidden from the drive until
all Z buffered sectors are written to the drive media or the groups of Z sectors of data in flight to the drive
must be transferred to a nonvolatile memor...
