format Conversion Device
In disk control subsystems it is necessary to maintain power to disks long enough to cleanly terminate
disk transactions and transition logic and write caches to preserve modified data not yet destaged to disk.
The maintenance of power to devices after line input has been lost is potentially difficult, expensive and
requires considerable physical volume for energy storage (batteries and the like). The expense and
volume required are related to the amount of power consumed by the system in this state. The system
elements also potentially have different durations required for power maintenance.
Management of the system elements consuming power during this hold up period will diminish the
system cost and volume. Shutting off disk power in an enclosure dramatically drops power consumption.
However, format conversion devices associated with the disks may require power maintained longer than
the disk to ensure data integrity. The power to the disk is controlled by the format conversion device and
is separate from the format conversion power. When line voltage loss is detected the conversion device
presents PFW to the disk according to the algorithm defined by the design. The conversion device shuts
off power to the drive after a predetermined time. Alternatively power can be shut off to the drive sooner if
