This writer automatically loads 5»-inch diskettes to a disk drive, writes programs to the disk, unloads the written diskette from the drive, prints program identification information on a label, labels the diskette, and then inserts the diskette into a protective envelope. The writer read-verifies the written disk under stress conditions, to ensure later interchangeability of the disk in a variety of disk drives, and rejects disks that do not meet the stress conditions. The writer uses a standard 48 tpi or 96 tpi double-sided diskette drive 10. The primary function of the writer is to operate attached to a host computer system which down-loads software images, format information and labeling information to the writer. The writer is controlled by a personal computer (PC) 11 having a hard disk file.
