A method is described to notify the operator of a battery-powered computer when a low battery condition exists so that some action may be taken before power is lost. Loss of power to a computer could mean loss of data to a user. On a battery-powered computer, the user should know when the battery is at a low state so some action can be taken to save the data and exit the application. Also, the warning should occur at a time which maximizes the life of the battery. An early warning loses useful battery life, and a warning too late loses memory contents. The optimal time a low battery warning should be issued is when the battery has enough power left to save data and exit an application before all power is lost. Some battery-powered computers use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to indicate a low battery condition.
