Electrostatic-Discharge Protective Handling Clamp for Printed-Circuit Cards

This device protects populated printed circuit cards from damaged integrated circuit components through electrostatic discharge, while handling the cards, by shorting all backside solder pins together with a conductive plastic foam pad. Clamp upper jaw 1 and lower jaw 2 are squeezed together by hand, compressing spring 3 and pivoting jaws on two bolts 4. While open, printed circuit card 5 is inserted into card-insertion guide 6 (with card component side toward upper jaw 1) to insertion stop 7. Applied hand pressure is released, compressing spring 3 closes jaws, and conductive plastic foam pad 8 is forced against pin-side of printed circuit card 5, electrically shorting all pins together.
