Abstract

A standalone 'BOX' 10 (Fig. 1) connects to a host computer via host coax 15 and to a terminal via terminal coax 20. The box 10 functions to display system availability, to identify host name and application available, and to control power using host programming. Heretofore a user could not walk into a strange terminal room and immediately tell which main computer system was connected to which terminal. Once a system is found the user also does not immediately know if it is available unless he turns it on. The usual mode of operation is to turn all terminals on to find the one system wanted. Sometimes all terminals are turned on and none are available so they either all stay on or the energy conscious user then proceeds to turn them all off.
