Abstract

This article describes a method which can be used to provide a utility for diagnostic programmers that gives them an easy way to enter protection mode and use the protection mode feature of the Intel 80286 microprocessor. This utility offers the diagnostic programmer the ability to enter and use the protection mode feature of the Intel 80286 microprocessor without having to go through the complex coding required to enter and exit protection mode, create special entries for the required descriptor tables, or create interrupt table entries for intercepting special interrupts that may be used by the program. The utility also provides a method for intercepting other interrupts that may occur that are unexpected by the program and ends the program while indicating the probable error condition that caused the failure.
