In a robot system tools are to be positioned in an exactly defined position within the work envelope of the robot to allow the robot gripper to seize it. The figure shows a tool holder having an upright frame member 1 mounted to a base member 2, which can be fixedly mounted to the work table of a robot or to a pallet. The frame member 1 has an elongated slot 3 and a recessed part 4 for receiving an adapter unit 6 to which different tools 7 can be mounted. The adapter has two bolts 8 with flat heads which fit into slot 3 and recessed part 4. Means 5 is provided to prevent misplacing of the tool, i.e., placing the tool turned around 180Œ.
