This article describes an adapter disposed between a display controller and a mouse, which is a hand-held cursor position device. The adapter includes X and Y counters which count pulses produced by the mouse moving in X and Y directions. Each counter is presettable to any count value by software, whereby the resolution for the mouse movement can be varied. The X counter consists of a pair of up/down counters 1 and 2 each of which comprises eight stages, for example, to count from "00" to "FF" (hexadecimal). Prior to the movement of the mouse, a particular value, e.g., "FD", is set in the counters 1 and 2 via a bus 3 under the control of a Load signal. During the movement in the +X direction, pulses from the mouse appear on a line 4 to cause the counter 1 to count up and the couner 2 to count down.
