Abstract

A DC voltage applied to a piezoelectric tip, such as depicted in Fig. 1, will provide a "micro" displacement from the zero position. Those piezoelectric tips are made from two thin ceramic elements assembled and glued at a reverse polarization in order to get a bi-amplified assembly. They are commercially available. The left end of the assembly is fixed, the other one is free to move around the zero position when the DC electric voltage is applied. Standard Piezoelectric tip specifications are: Length : 20 mm max. Thickness : 3 mm max. Displacement : +- 30 mm Voltage : +- 30 VDC Resolution : smaller than 10-7m (These specs are load dependent.) It is possible to implement such tips in an optical microscope without major modification, to provide ultra-precise automatic focus. Figs.
