Monocomponent Toner Classification With the Use of a Magnetic Grating

Magnetic images exhibit a substantial degree of non-uniform development, which is readily apparent from observations of isolated developed pels (picture elements) when compared with ferrofluid development of these same images. To understand this problem, we have conducted experiments showing that developed images are preferentially decorated with smaller particles from the toner size distribution, and also, that a toner size vs. recorded wavelength relationship is present. Although there are several other contributing factors to non-uniform development, it is apparent that toner size distribution will be an ultimate limiting factor.
