A robot can be programmed to know the location of features of a workpiece with respect to the edges of the workpiece; however, when picking up a workpiece from a tote, the robot has difficulty in knowing the location of the edges of the workpiece. The figure shows a robotic end effector 1 which incorporates mechanical memory devices 2 and 4. The mechanical memory devices 2 and 4 are used to assist the robot in positioning the end effector with respect to the location of the edges of a workpiece 14. The end effector 1 has a base plate 10 which has suction cups 12 attached thereto for picking up and holding a workpiece 14. A first set of guide tracks 16 is provided and attached to brackets 18, which in turn, are mounted on the base plate 10. A first set of slides 20 rides on the first set of guide tracks 16.
