Method for Embedding Servo Information Using Laser Processing

Described here is a method by which one can use a laser to embed servo information on a magnetic disk. In one embodiment, light from a laser is focused to a small spot on the disk. This light is absorbed by the particle/binder system on the disk surface. The consequent heating melts the binder and allows the particles in this region to orient in response to a local magnetic field. This orientation may be either horizontal or vertical. The disk is spinning so that when the molten spot moves out of the magnetic field the particles remain oriented. Servo information may be embedded on the disk by not orienting certain regions of the disk.
