Abstract

An automatic screwdriver has an internally ported bit to allow vacuum pick-up of screws with externally fluted heads. The screwdriver is modified for robot manipulation and control in automatic assembly operations by provision of gripper-compatible external surfaces and compliance in the driving direction. As shown in Fig. 1, manual automatic screwdriver 1 is stripped of its normal plastic overcasing and placed in square aluminum case 2 with locating pins 3. The hand switch is replaced by a robot-controlled relay at the controller which has the ability to switch off the driver once a set torque is reached via power lead 4. The whole driver is free to move axially but not rotationally within the aluminum casing 2.
