By allowing a user to select either an action or one of possibly many objects in any order, maximum flexibility is imparted to a windowing environment. Present user interface systems permit either selection of objects before actions, or actions before objects. However, the order is fixed and cannot be varied. As such, system flexibility is somewhat less than desired. A solution to this problem is to allow orderless selection of objects and actions. As various actions or objects are selected or deselected, an object list is built. When the user selects a DO button, the action is performed on the objects selected regardless of the order of selection.
