Copier monitoring systems comprise a host computer and a collection of terminals. Often the terminal has the ability to store records of activity or transactions at its copier for later transmission to the host. During this transmission of the "off-line" data, errors may occur in the transmission of this data. The error may only be detected in the terminal while the host is ready to receive the next record of off-line data. The terminal may resend the off-line data, while the host sees it as a new record of off-line data. This results in a loss of data integrity at the host. To avoid this problem, a means is provided to prevent miscounting of off-line data between the host and the terminal. The format of the off-line data message sent by the terminal to the host contains a "receipt number.
