A voice coil motor-driven rotary actuator for a magnetic disk file is shown which affords high performance in a compact space in the environment of a small disk file. A permanent magnet circuit is formed by magnets 2 and 3, pole pieces 4 and 5, and gaps 6 and 7. Coil 8 is configured to pass through gaps 6 and 7 and is fixed to head/arm assembly 9. Pole pieces 4 and 5 are fixed to a base (not shown) which also holds the axes of the disks and the head arm assembly. Cover 10 encloses the head/arm/coil assembly, magnets 2 and 3, disks and pole pieces 4 and 5.
