An arrangement is described to insure that when a program is run on a data processing system, such as the IBM Personal Computer (PC) where information may be displayed on either a color display or a monochrome display, the information as presented on each display will appear from a color content standpoint substantially the same. For example if the data is displayed on the monochrome display as green characters on a black background, then the data will appear on the color display as green characters on a black background. In the PC system each character is represented by two bytes in the refresh buffer for the display device. One byte is the character code point and the other byte is the attribute, e.g., normal, reverse video, for the first byte when the monochrome device is attached to the system.
