Error-Proof Module Actuation With Position Indication

High density array, pluggable module insertion in current technologies is accomplished by an actuation tool designed to position the module pins into the mating spring connectors. A torque override device is necessary to prevent damage to the system by over-actuating. Operator sensitivity is required to prevent possible miss plugs which could result in machine failure. This article describes a non-torque critical device which eliminates the human factor problems found in the old design, plus providing a visual indication of the module position. The actuator tool (Fig. 1) is composed of an eccentric shaft 12, a tang pin 13, a travel limit pin 14, a spring-ball detent 15 and a handle 16. The tang pin 13 anchors in the array carrier insert slot 17 and provides a pivot point for eccentric 12 which drives the module.
