A method is described to make selected information from the first logical record of a file, which comprises a dataset that does not contain index structures recognized by the operating system's data management program or the I/O control system, available to application programs without requiring the application program to issue an explicit read request. The term "flat file" is sometimes used with reference to such a file. Word processing programs use flat files which contain a signature in the first logical sector to identify its own datasets. The term "signature" refers to a predefined byte pattern which is unlikely to occur randomly in a normal data stream. The contents of the remainder of the first logical record are dependent upon the dataset type.
