A distributed processing building-block includes a multi-port bus facility which allows the building of distributed system networks of arbitrary form. A three-port process control unit (PCU) 1 supports the build-up of a multiprocessor distributed system of arbitrary form. The three ports on PCU 1 are: 1. A master (M) port 2 attached by bus 3 to locally owned resources (in a node of the network), such as a storage 4, I/O controllers, channels or devices 5 and an arithmetic unit 6. 2. Subsidiary (S) port 8 which supports attachment of PCU 1 to master port M of another sub unit, such as host system 10, in the build-up of a network.
