The present article describes a modified method of locating the head/ arm stack on the actuator and of merging the heads and arms with a stack of magnetic recording disks in a disk file. In order to ensure that the head/arm stack will clear the disks initially and to prevent it being moved by the actuator return spring, the actuator spindle table is first clamped near to the outer crash stop. The arm stack is brought down vertically onto the table and made temporarily pivotable about a pin located in one of the bolt holes on the spindle table. The arm stack is then swung about the temporary pivot into engagement with a boss and locating pin which provide axial and angular alignment on the table.
