Abstract

Using a four-level hierarchy of geometric entities, and providing classifications with concise parameter definitions for various features, primitives and image patterns, permits a fully automated robotics vision system to perform dimensional inspection of three-dimensional (3-D) solid opaque mechanical parts. A major cost of mechanical part inspection is the interpretation of specifications and the planning of the inspection sequences (procedures). When the design and/or tolerance specifications for the part are changed, or when a new part is to be inspected, the system automatically generates the proper sequences and procedures for inspection with minimum time lag and cost. There is a four-level hierarchy of geometric entities.
