The present invention is directed to an improved collet 1 to be used in the manufacture of tractor drive shafts and similar components which have a rectangular cross section and a concentric bearing surface. The figure shows an end view of the collet 1 and a cross section of the rectangular shaft 4. The collet 1 has four jaws 2. The jaws 2 are used to position the rectangular shaft 4. The jaws 2 of the improved collet 1 of the present invention differ from a prior-art collet in that the jaws 2 are undercut 6. The undercut 6 is such that the depth d is approximately 5% of the jaw separation s, and the ledge extends from the centerline position a distance D which is approximately 15% of the jaw separation. The undercuts 6 are so positioned that the ledges 8 are diagonally opposed.
