Wire replacement in a vertical stitcher is simplified by the use of a plastic faceplate which wraps about the reel of wire. A flexible plastic faceplate 10 holds the end of wire 11 to facilitate easy loading of the wire to a vertical stitcher. This faceplate, or wire holder, has sufficient flexibility so that it can be wrapped about the outside wire layer on a spool of wire (not shown). The end of the wire is affixed, for example, by heat welding, to faceplate tab 12. After the spool is positioned adjacent to the stitcher, the tape or other holding means is released, allowing the faceplate to be unwrapped from the spool, and to be placed in a position on the stitcher's housing where wire 11 is presented to the various operating parts of the stitcher's wire-handling mechanisms.
