An enhancement to the IBM Displaywriter "Display Index" function is described which makes viewing and selection of documents more useful. In the Displaywriter, when a task such as revise or print document prompts the operator for a document name, if the operator cannot remember the name, an index of the diskette's contents can be listed on the screen. Once the operator finds the desired document it must be remembered as the operator returns to the prompt and enters it into the system. If an error is made, the operation is repeated. In the enhancement, the function is invoked by a single key - the Dir key - as opposed to pressing a key and then selecting the directory function from a menu. The operator can qualify which documents are listed by specifying document selection criteria, such as directory name and/or document name.
