A method is described for maintaining the correct print wheel information during overstrike processing using a print wheel printer, such as the IBM 5218. Since an operator may have text characters from one print wheel (US ASCII, for example) and desire to overstrike part of the line with a double underscore (available on the symbols print wheel), the method instructs the operator when to mount each print wheel. In addition, a new "Begin Overstrike Control" that contains information regarding the hammer intensity for the overstrike character and the print wheel prompt for that character is provided. By designing the "Begin Overstrike Control" such that it has a variable field length, other controls can be imbedded with the "Begin Overstrike Control.
