Abstract

Footnoting is an advanced text editing or word processor feature. Currently, there is no way for the user of a word processor supporting this feature to automatically generate "op cit" and "ibid" references in footnotes. These have to be done manually. The solution to this problem is to treat each footnote as an object having various attributes. One of the attributes of the footnote is its name. The user can enter the name of another footnote in a DESCRIBE pop-down panel on the screen for the current footnote object. By doing this, she/he will automatically create either an op cit or an ibid reference, as appropriate. A further option is the page number to use. If no page number exists, an ibid reference is created and placed in the text of the footnote.
