Intermittent Error Location in State Driven Units

For location of intermittent errors in state driven units upon occurrence of an error, the last good state number and the wrong state number are saved and stored. By means of a diagnostic program, specified for the specific state driven unit, information is logically derived from the saved state values and a prioritized list indicating the failing components causing that failure is provided. State driven units, e.g., electromagnetic input-output devices, are monitored by observing vital machine signal transitions. These machine signals are changed as the device cycles through the requested function. The cycling of a device through a requested function is ordered along a path by known state numbers. The paths should be probabilized if multiple paths are possible. Each function has a unique set of state numbers.
