While currently available computer system disk storage programs consider only total access counts, a report program has been needed to determine optimum placement of disk data sets as a function of the sequence of accesses as well as the total access counts by data set. This method in this article meets this need through the expedient of a data set affinity matrix. When installing, modifying, or tuning a computer system with one or more disk storage devices, a systems analyst must determine the location of data sets on the disk storage device(s) being utilized. The analyst must decide which data sets should be placed on which disk, and the order/proximity of the data sets on any given disk.
