There is a growing recognition of the need to reduce the time lost by a subscriber in trying to place a telephone call when the called subscriber is away from the telephone. This article describes a PABX absentee service that allows a calling extension that made an unsuccessful attempt to an unanswered extension to be automatically connected to the called extension when the called subscriber comes back to his office. A subscriber who fails to complete a call because of the called subscriber failing to answer can notify the PABX system that the service of automatic recalling is desired, by dialing a suffix dedicated to that service. The system responds to the request by storing the calling and called number in two associated locations within a memory table.
